Sunday 15th July: Omaha Spit planting

10/070/2012

The Omaha Shorebird Protection Trust is pleased to advise that construction of the pest proof fence at North Omaha Reserve is well under way. The contractors Xcluder Pest Proof Fencing Ltd will complete the work by the end of July.

The fence will help protect endangered New Zealand dotterels and variable oystercatchers which nest on the sand spit from August to February. Predators include rats, stoats, weasels, hedgehogs, cats and dogs.

Pedestrian access will be provided at Walkway 1 and from the beach at the rock groyne.

OSPT is holding a dune planting morning at 10:00am on Sunday 15 July. Volunteers are invited to meet at the car park at the end of Omaha Drive.

Please bring a small spade or garden trowel. If the weather is adverse, planting will be postponed until 2:00pm on Saturday 21 July.
